plum-tart-2.jpg

We have all had that horrid experience of moving. I think probably one of the worst experiences is moving in New York City. I realize being young and living in a transient environment people move often but it is not so often that people buy their first home. I thought instead of bringing over flowers, a bottle of champagne or a welcome mat I would bring dinner for the happy couple. So they did not have to worry about cooking or ordering among all the boxes and can enjoy the comforts of their new home.
The Menu
Roasted Chicken
Sundried Tomato Pasta
Mesclun Greens
Roasted Peppers and Eggplant
Plum Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream

Plum Tart
This tart is simple and delicious. Perfect for when you are in a rush and need to impress!
1 Sheet of Puff Pastry (approximately 8.6 oz cut into three pieces)
4 Plums
3 Tablespoons of Apricot Jam
1 Egg (for Egg Wash)
Serve with Vanilla Ice Cream
Preheat Oven 425
Slice Plums 1/8 inch slices and cut in half. (So that they are in a semi circle) Layer the plum slices on the puff pastry, leaving the edges of pastry uncovered. In a separate bowl beat the egg and a tablespoon of water.  With a pastry brush the edges of the pastry. Place in oven and bake for 25 minutes until the puff pastry is golden brown.
In a sauce pan melt the apricot jam on low heat. Once the tarts have been taken out of the oven brush the top of the tart with the jam. This will give a little more taste and have that professional glossy finish.

Summertime is filled with many weekend getaways and other fun social
activities there are many times when one is a guest or hosting. On many occasions
I have been asked what should I bring? Here are few ideas: Let’s say a
top ten list of different hostess gifts. So often it is not the dollar amount it is just the thought and gesture that matter. Please let me know if there
are any ideas of ones you like to give or receive? Also in this month
issue of Domino magazine they had a list of different ideas that I
thought were also fun hostess gift ideas.

1. Sending Flowers in advance
2. A bottle of wine, champagne, specialty Beer, or a pound of fresh coffee – but then you could wrap in a dish towel or something fun.
3. Kitchen gadgets – Wine openers, Candy Thermometers Random little items are always fun to receive.
4. Hand Cream – this is one of my favorite dinner party hostess gifts I received. I thought it was so sweet and thoughtful to bring hand cream
5. Candles/ Soaps something that you don’t always think of buying yourself
6. Make it yourself- do you have something you make that is your specialty? Well make that and package it up nicely- jams, cookies, candies etc.
7. A Grocery Bag
8. A specialty item from your area- is there a special store that sells chocolates a bakery known for something? One of my favorites the Cinnamon Babka Bread from Dean and Deluca… I think it is to die for and have definitely brought it on many occasions.
9. Wrap a bunch of fun magazines together, guilty pleasures you sometimes don’t indulge. They make for great poolside and beach reading.
10. I have a sweet tooth! Once I received a large bag of all kinds of candy. The next day I brought it into the office to share and heard, ” Why don’t I have friend that would bring me a bag of candy???”

The Green Movement has been around for a while. But defiantly in the past year has gained momentum finally in the United States. The New Bank of America Building being built in NYC is completely GREEN receiving platinum LEED standing. The Economist Last issue was on – How business is tackling climate change. Positive initiatives are taking place. But here is one for the kitchen. I know some people have been doing this for a while but next time you go to market to pick up your groceries why not bring your own BAG.
Living in NYC I would usually bring a backpack to the grocery store it just makes it easier to carry groceries home and up flights of stairs! Recently, I received this great grocery bag, as a gift, it is the Trader Joe’s grocery bag. When I opened it there were many envious individuals☺ Thank you Mary! (It was explained to me this could also double as a beach bag) I am a big believer that it is all the little things that matter and taking your own grocery bag to the store is a start! Otherwise it will end up in the city landfill.
I thought this was a great gift and I will probably be giving it to others. It could make for a fun hostess gift.

flower_arrangement_roses.jpg

Spring time is here or should I say the calendar indicates that it’s Spring! One thing I love about Spring is flowers; ever since I was a little girl flowers have always been my favorite thing. They just make me happy. Flowers are one of the most common hostess gifts given and for a good reason. The price points range, enabling anyone to purchase, and above all else, who does not like to receive them? But how about taking it one step further?

My mother’s favorite hostess gifts to both give and receive are flowers. But she says the nicest thing is to receive them a day before or morning of an event. This way everyone can enjoy them and if she is having a dinner party, she won’t be arranging the flowers while getting the roast out of the oven. My sister’s fiancé did this on his first trip out West to visit my parents- I heard about the orchid for the next week and how thoughtful and wonderful he is. (The extra effort went a very long way)

Sure there is always 1-800 Flowers, but there are many other routes to go- find a hotel you might like, based on aesthetics, in the area and see who they use or recommend. Also you can call/ visit the website of Bbrooks Fine Flowers which has a partnership with all the leading florists in the nation. This way you can locate the best in the area. Hopefully, this is just helpful information since there are always occassions when flowers are the perfect gift.

Remember your birthdays growing up? They were always a HUGE deal. Well, at least they were for me! This past weekend a little friend of mine was turning three and he loves the Disney Pixar movie- Cars. I was asked to make the cake for his big day with this theme in mind. I was a little nervous for two reasons: I was not sure if this cake was going to remotely resemble Lightening McQueen AND turning three is monumental at that age. In the end, after several hours of preparation, I have to say I was so excited about the final result! The best part is that this movie, like most Pixar films, is that it is for of all ages; it has become one of my sister’s new favorites- so she might be getting this cake for her 29th birthday.

Chocolate Cake
3/4 Cup of Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1 1/2 Cups of Buttermilk
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
1 3/4 Cup of Flour
2 Cups of Sugar
3 Eggs
2 Sticks of Of Softened Butter
1/4 Teaspoon of Salt
1 Teaspoon of Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon of Baking Powder
Preheat Oven 350

In a mixing bowl mix together sugar, butter until well combined, then beat in vanilla and eggs one at a time. Once well combined stir in buttermilk. In a separate bowl combine flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. One cup at a time add flour mixture to sugar mixture until well combined. In this case I greased the Lightening McQueen Cake tin or the other option would be to grease 2- eight inch round cake pans. Bake for 35 minutes until a knife comes out clean. Let cool before flipping over to release the cake. This cake was decorated with a buttercream icing- more than anything it just took time and patience.

I also made Cup Cakes and put race flags in each of them to go along with the Cars Theme.

The favors were a little Lightening McQueen Car with candy wrapped in Cellophane paper and tied with a black and white checkers.

This past weekend a friend of mine had me cater a party at his apartment to help promote my blog. It was a pre-party before a casino night to honor Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York. When I am planning a party, I’m always more efficient when I have a theme to keep me focused. Since it was a Casino Night, I decided to keep this theme for the pre-party.

In the flower arrangement, I interspersed a deck of cards (thanks Mrs. Funston) and used primary color to try and bring out the colors of cards. The event was black-tie optional, so I chose to make the appetizers a little more special (the pigs-in-a-blanket were a must per the request of the host, but these are always a crowd favorite!) I also made place cards with dice to label each dish.

This was the menu- I tried to have something for everyone- meat, fish, veggie, both simple and more complicated. Thank you Avi for helping promote this site.

Mini Yorkshire Pudding with Roast Beef
Parmesan Cheese Cups with Goat Cheese Mousse
Gruyere, Sage, and Prosciutto Pinwheels
Chicken and Shrimp Satay with Pineapple and Peanut Sauce
Cauliflower Fritters topped with Salmon and Creme Frache
BLT Cup- Cherry Tomatoes hallowed out with bacon, lettuce, and red onion
Carrot Dill Soup Shooters with a Dill Pesto
Peanut Butter Truffles and Grape Jellies
Pantry’s Signature Cookie

box_wine.jpg

About once a month, I attend a wine night with fr. We’ve tried everything from: white, red, sparkling, rose, regions, and last week- boxed! Now there are many different ways in which you could host a wine night. For now I will tell you how the one I attend is organized.

  • It is usally about 14-15 people with new people coming each time.
  • The hostess starts the evening by describing each of the wines that we will be trying. There are four wines wrapped up so we cannot see what we are tasting.
  • We each pick a number out of a hat so groups are organized randomly.
  • There is a sheet where we list things about each wine after we taste it from flavor to color.
  • Once we have completed the rounds, the hostess does a recap and askes questions about what we thought about the different wines as they are revealed. (The hostess has titled this night Wine Snobs in Training)
  • There is always scrumptious nibbles to be had!
  • Each attendee chips in $10 to help cover the costs.

Now this wine night requires a lot of work on behalf of the hostess. Another way it could be done is each person brings a Pinot Grigio from Italy (with a little research) and the hostess prepares some Italian sides to accompany.

It is a great way to get new and old people together !

Sometimes you just want something simple when you are having people over. I find it even harder to find a good sandwich place if you don’t want a chain. Recently, I was having a mini reunion with some friends from high school (someone was in from out of town) we were going to grab sandwiches and then bring it to one of our apartments to catch up. Instead we opted to make our own. I had everyone over to my tiny place. I roasted a chicken and provided the condiments. We chose to have club sandwiches, but you really could do this with a wide variety next you want have people over for an easy lunch.

Dressing Choices included: Lettuce, Tomatoes, Bacon, Cucumber, Onion, Brie, Cranberry Sauce (these last two items I thought would provide unique sandwich variations)

I have always liked flowers. I vividly remember when I was about five years old my parents came back from Paris and my mother had purchased sugared flowers from Fauchons. At the time I thought this was one of the coolest things ever. Flowers are an easy way to decorate a dish, use them in a dessert or a salad. In f act, there are a group of flowers that are edible.

Here are a group of edible flowers:

Carnation, Chrysanthemum, Cornflower, Daisy, Gardenia, Honeysuckle, Lavender, Marigold, Nasturtium, Pansy, Peony, Rose, Viola, Violet.

Sugared Flowers
Coat petals with frothy egg whites and then cover with super fine sugar, let dry on a rack

burger.jpg

Summertime is always a great time for barbeques. Hamburgers are one of the simplest pleasures. How about making the ordinary hamburger party a little more festive by making it a competition of who can grill up the best burger? That is what happened on the balcony of this upper eastside apartment. Evan and Lee brought the best they had to offer in the intense “Burger Off.” I had no idea at the beginning just how competitive a burger contest could be. The judges were friends from both sides, so in fact it was great way to merge two groups together in a fun interactive way- where food is the focus, but there is an element of friendly competition. As each judge gave their comments and votes, by secret ballot, Evan emerged as the winner with his thick and juicy burger on a brioche role. (his secret recipe unfortunately cannot be shared)

For the next time- Rules need to be established up front and agreed upon. But all in all the first burger off was quite a success.
